Sun position calculator - Azimuth and Zenith

Example: Queen Street, Ashford, uk

Guidance

The sun position depends on the location of the observer. To display the current position of the sun, it requires the input of the location. This can be entered by clicking on the map or by typing your address in the address bar. In the configuration menu, any date can be selected. With the ‘time slider ‘ the time can be selected continuously. Small time steps can be set by pressing the arrow keys (left and right).

The three graphs are interpreted as follows:

  • Top right is shown azimuth angle in function of time.
  • Bottom left is the zenith angle as a function of time visible.
  • Bottom right shows the graph of the zenith angle as a function of azimuth angle.

The current sun position is displayed on the map and in all graphs. On the map, the azimuth angle is visualized by the line. In the graphs, the labeling of the current sun position is done with a round marker.

Definition azimuth angle:
The azimuth is counted starting from the north on the east, so that a star in the north has an azimuth of 0 °, a star in the east has an azimuth of 90 °.

Definition zenith angle:
The Zenith is starting to be counted from the horizontal to the perpendicular. If the sun is directly above the observer, the zenith has an angle of 90 °. The horizon has thus a zenith of 0 °.
